There has been a resurgence of interest in Newton’s life since the release of the movie Amazing Grace. This book continues the interest by offering a faithful depiction of Newton, using for the first time Newton’s personal diaries and letters. Although known mostly for writing the song “Amazing Grace” and for his role in the abolition of the slave trade, this biography reveals many facets about Newton that are not as well-known. For example, “Amazing Grace” was first written as a teaching aid for Newton’s congregation, and Newton’s courtship with his wife, Polly, lasted for eight years.
Aitken, who is now a well-known British author but once served time in prison after committing perjury while in British Parliament, writes as someone who knew Newton personally or at least as someone who empathizes with Newton’s verse “I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.” Once you start reading this book, you will not want to put it down. Newton’s life of grace and service to God will encourage you in your own walk with God.
