We are women; hear us roar. But don’t listen too closely or you might also hear us sigh with exhaustion as we shoulder the daily pressures of life. And don’t expect us to hear too much more than we can currently absorb because the noises in our lives have bombarded us at all levels. Unfortunately those noises also can drown out the still, small voice of the Lord that actually should guide our every move.

Meditation has several different meanings but a common one is “continued, intent, and focused thought.” It comes as no surprise to me that this was one of the hardest articles I’ve ever written. My plan was to be alone for 10 days reading the Word and meditating on the Lord . . . simply spending quality time with my Father. Unfortunately, it did not go exactly as I had hoped. Every single time I sat down to write something would come up.

My first experience at fasting was a failed one. While I was attending a small church, one of the members fell ill. The pastor called the congregation to a day of prayer and fasting for the church member. I had never before fasted. I did not know much about how to fast. But I did want my brother in Christ to get well, so I participated.

I have a bad habit of losing my train of thought when I pray. I start my silent prayers with good intentions and before I know it, I’m chasing rabbits down overgrown paths. I forget not only what I was praying for, but also what I was even praying to begin with. Even worse, sometimes I forget the things that I pray about. I have no way of knowing when God has answered my prayers. It has always amazed me that some people can sit down with nothing but their thoughts and spend 30 minutes talking with God. I’m not that spiritual. If I’m going to talk with God for 30 minutes, I need some tools at my disposal, particularly a pen and some paper.
